When I was contacted about this pup the rescuer relayed to me that the original owner was going to shoot her- but the neighbor interveened and moved her to the county pound where she may have a better opportunity to find a new home or be euthanized humanely. Luckily IBR was able to pull her.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_U8A8hru5O90/SDDsJO4dVxI/AAAAAAAAGV0/hy8oALJDqAQ/s400/IrelynnFoster1a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5201917212970800914" />
Here is what her foster mom wrote at the time: "Irelynn is settling in wonderfully at our home. We couldn't keep calling our little girl Patsy, it isn't a pretty enough name for such a lovely girl. She is settling in at Camp Seeling like she has always been here. She had a little steak and baked potato with her kibble and seemed to think that was pretty good stuff! She joined her foster brother and sister for a nice walk and did just fine-tail wagging and head held high the whole 3 miles. I doubt she has had much leash walking in her former life, but she walked in a pretty good little heel chugging along next to her gsp sis. She had a little sponge bath in the kitchen and help pretty still, even for her ear cleaning. She is an eager to please young lady, comes in from outside when called and knows "sit" pretty reliably.

Irelynn is a gentle dog who is a polite houseguest. She already has made herself at home on the couch, curling up in a tight little pointer ball. She is a charming young lady-gives hugs and buries her head in your chest-too sweet. She knows "go potty." So house training is going just fine too. She met alot of dogs today, and seems to want to be friends with everybody. Irelynn is a sweet tempered, well mannered young dog who really enjoys the company of people she is a real lovey dovey girl!"
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_U8A8hru5O90/SDDsJe4dVyI/AAAAAAAAGV8/5NwZjY4iLKg/s400/IrelynnHomeA.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5201917217265768226" />
Irelynn found her own special home. Although he has a lot of drive he isn't stubborn. The fact that Rusty has so much point in him made it easy to staunch him up on birds. He retrieves well also. All I had to do was throw some bumpers in the yard for him and call him back. Done. He makes me look like I can train. He's 5 years old now.

***************************************************************************
Gypsie is a year old and I got her as a 14 week old pup from IBR.

When I first saw her she had a high snappy tail, and was launching her body into the adult dogs.

She was bold.

Gyp has all the tools. A good nose, a beautiful gait with a high snappy tail, and a lot of drive without being stubborn.

She is a work in progress, but she could be a real good one.

We have just come home from a week long hunting trip where I was lamenting a bit on the last day about not getting any good bird work from Gypsie.

Well, on the last walk of the last day she pointed a covey of prairie chickens.

I dropped one for her and she retrieved. Earlier that day I had shot a limit of 3 roosters over 3 Rusty points and now a covey for Gyp.

Needless to say, I was thrilled.

She still has a long way to go, but that was major progress.

One last note from Rich:

I told Lisa if I could have him for the rest of my days I'd be happy. I met an 80 year old guy last week that was hunting w/ a pointer and a setter. How's that for giving a guy hope! Anyway, I was describing for him how Rusty handles running roosters by outrunning them and then back pointing them pinning the bird between me and him. Some get away, but he's quite successful at it. The old gentlemen told me I may never have another dog in my life that learns to do that. Dogs don't live long enough.

Thanks again,

Rich

P.S. Rusty is not a finished dog. He is not steady to wing and shot, but he is as staunch as the day is long. He is not force broke. Most of the birds are deposited on my toe. But I'm fine with that. He's just my personal hunting dog and I think we both like it that way, although Rusty would probably hunt for anyone that will take him.

Marbles aka Polly

Marbles' history: Marbles is a tri colored American Field Bred English Setter. She was found as a stray in Southern Indiana. She is safe in foster care and this is what her foster mom has to say: "Marbles is adorable. She is quite timid but she definitely has a lot of love to give. You can tell she wants to run right in to your arms for lots of loving but she just can't quiet get over her fear. She will run right up to you doing a full body wag but stops just short of you and tentatively stretches her head out to your for a little rub. I think she will come around quickly though, and be able to cuddle the way you can tell she really wants to. As I type this she is curled up with my boyfriend, Brian, on the floor enjoying a nice neck rub. She is a little less shy with Kya (my adopted IBR Setter) than she is with us but still is a bit timid around her. They have already gotten in to a few good wrestling matches and a little game of chase in the backyard. I think Marbles is a little worn out from her journey and Kya wishes she would play a little longer but for tonight I think Marbles just wants a good sleep."

Upon arrival to Illinois and into foster care, Marbles seemed to be struggling. She also had a raging infection, although we were not sure where it came from. Her white blood cell count was very high but her tick panels were inconclusive. It was discovered thru chiropractic care that she had severe pain and issues with her lower back. It was finally established that she had blasto, an extremely nasty fungal disease that can be fatal if not diagnosed in time. Once diagnosed, Marbles could go through her treatments and fortunately has been recovering from the illness.
Update from Marbles Forever home:

Just wanted to give you all an update on Marbles, now named Polly. She
is doing just great! She came in yesterday for her follow-up chest xray
and her chest looks totally clear. She definitely recognized me but ran
right back to her daddy Mike which made me happy. She is definitely
"Home." She is best friends with her brother Zeke they play all the
time and Mike says he is teaching her to catch and she is teaching him to point birds and chipmunks in the yard!

Older sister Kaiya is a bit crabby in her old age and is fine with letting the young ones do their
own thing and leave her alone to enjoy her golden years. Polly has all
different things for breakfast each morning, one day oatmeal, the next
day quinoa mixed with yogurt, then for dinner she eats the Primal Raw
she was eating at my house. Mike says she LOVES raw chicken wings and
backs which she had never had at my house because Audrey is allergic to
chicken. It sounds like she has settled in just fine and took no time
at all to learn the Invisible Fence. I knew she wouldn't have a
problem, she is so smart. She is going to stay on the Sporanox for one
more month for the Blasto just to be sure it is totally gone. Attached
is a photo of Polly, Mike and Zeke.

-Ellen

Gertrude aka Daisy

Gertie's history: Gertie is a Setter mix about 9 months old. She was seperated from her mother--Helena-- on 2/4/06 the day she came into foster care. Her mother is so precious that her foster Mom decided to keep her & Gertrude takes after her mother. She is a treasure. We thought it would take her a while to settle in, but after the second day in our home her personality began to shine through. She was housetrained in only one day & we're working on some basic obedience. She is learning about all of the interesting things inside of the house. Everything seems like a potential toy to her right now. Gertie has the typical happy setter personality. She has a joyful look in her eyes. We do allow her to sleep in bed at night. She's a good sleeper & never makes us uncomfortable. Furniture priveledges are a must for this girl.

Check out her own foster blog: http://gertiegirlpointsetter.blogspot.com/

Update: Gertie, now called Daisy, has been at her forever home for over a year now. We do not know how long she was a stray, but she's definitely a young adult. I'd say she's around a year and a half old now. Brit is extremely intelligent. She is also an energetic girl, and I think she'd be awesome in Agility and Rally. She loves to go out to the park with me for walks, but I don't ask her to stay in close. I take her out on a 30' long line so she can cast and sniff to her heart's content. She has ton's of personality. She's a real tail-wagger, and gives little chin kisses. Belly rubs are her idea of bliss. She is also very inquisitive. Brit plays well with the other dogs, though now and then she gets bossy, and all I have to do is say, "Brit!" and she knows to settle down. She's used to eating in her crate, which is a procedure I use with multiple dogs in the household, so I can make sure everyone is getting their correct amount of food. Because she is very curious about any and everything, she's still sleeping in her crate at night. This prevents her from getting anything that might be harmful to her. I have not done a lot of obedience with her yet, as I really felt she needed to build confidence and to learn to trust people more. We have definitely accomplished those two goals. And physically, she's gorgeous! She has grown a beautiful coat, her eyes are bright and she's filled out considerably. (When she came to me, we could count every rib.) Brit would do well in a multiple dog household, but if she's in a single dog household, she will need companionship and activity with her family. She is quite gregarious."

Hi Lisa,<o></o>

<o></o>Britney is doing good, she had tons of energy! With consistent training she can be well behaved and is very eager to please. She loves her daily treat with her “meds” and will patiently sit and wait while you get it for her. She loves to be loved and shower you with kisses. She enjoys sleeping with you or lazing on the couch. When she is grumpy she will voluntarily go and sleep in her crate. She also has a bad habit of leg humping, but this is ONLY because she loves you. Gypsy loves to chase squirrels in the yard, rough-house with Winston, eat bugs and enjoys demolishing stuffed toys within an hour. I call her my Goofy Gypsy! He is very friendly- great with other dogs and school-aged children. He is about 21 months old and VERY friendly and cuddly. His foster mom says he took all the covers off the couches and carried them all to one area. She just laughs and calls him a maniac. Ru Ru also sleeps on the arm of the couch like a cat with half his butt hanging off of the couch and his head on the pillows behind my mom's neck while she is sitting on the couch. He is a stitch and is so cute and so silly and a PUPPY!! He is on the smaller side- about 40lbs. Rupert will need a safe fenced in yard.

Rupert is flourishing in his forever home and here are two photos from a recent fun weekend outing:

Mom Jutta writes: Because he has been such a good boy after his surgery to remove a cyst (you can just barely make out the stitches on his left hind leg), Rupert has been allowed to lounge on my lawn chair...of course, he has been such a good boy because he HAS TO (due to lampshade around neck). He's polite, well-mannered, is a total ball-hound and he loves to snuggle on the couch. We went to a neighbor's 4-year-old's birthday party Monday evening and he couldn't have been better. He was calm and let all the kids pet him - no jumping up on anyone. He's greeted several dogs in the neighborhood without any signs of fear or agression - he just wants to play. Yes, he loves the rabbits and squirrels, and he gets easily distracted, but that can all be worked on. I've attached some pics I took on Monday morning. She doesn't stop...her tails goes 100 miles an hour. She plays well with dogs, but very much prefers humans. She wants to be everywhere you are in or out of the house. She is a very loving sweet girl who enjoys giving kisses.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_U8A8hru5O90/RmduMqhBQ0I/AAAAAAAABFY/kJwpibDBBfY/s320/Midge1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073144669106422594" />
Her ABSOLUTE favorite thing to do is carry things in her mouth. If you don't watch her, you will have clothes, towels, blankets, pillows and shoes out in your backyard before you even notice. She never damages anything she carries around but just enjoys prancing with it in her mouth and following you. I believe she is probably around a year old- if that. Although she tends to have very much puppy behavior."
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_U8A8hru5O90/RmduMqhBQ1I/AAAAAAAABFg/-9PfsB511Wk/s320/Midge2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073144669106422610" />
Update from her forever home: Dear Melissa,
Midge is doing very well- she still has that puppy energy and behavior. She loves pointing at birds and chasing squirrels in our yard, She now has full reign of the house ( since she learned to open our door handles!)- and she has been great- no damage at all. She is still a counter surfer, though. She now has a big patio door through which she can watch the action at the bird feeders.
We occasionally go to the dog park, but Midge is not very good with small, aggressive attitude dogs. She is not very good at voice commands, so it is challenging to keep her away from the small dogs.
She does have a new best friend- my neighbors recently adopted an Australian shepard/lab mix puppy. Midge and Zoe play very well together- Midge a little bit on the dominant side, bit still nice.. They play nearly every day. The puppy is slowly getting bigger than Midge. It will be interesting to see what happens when one or both dogs realize that.
I am sending you a picture of Midge and Zoe. I would like to thank you again for fostering her- our family cannot imagine life without her!
Take care
Dalia

Skeets

Skeets was one of Nala's puppies.

Breaking News: Skeets got his OA !!

In a related story, at approximately 1PM Sunday May 19th, it was reported that Hell actually froze over <g> !!

Yes !! I am so proud of him...all joking aside, I LOVE this dog..."Reptile Dysfunction" and all !!!

Chris
</g></g></g>Skeets has his own blog now. He is in foster care in the Chicago area with a fun Weimaraner and a spunky Irish Setter and he is having a great time playing tag and chase in the yard. His foster Mom writes: "Gordon is a sweet puppy. He's fully housetrained & lets me know when he needs to go outside. He walks well on a leash. He has learned to 'sit' for treats, he learns fast & we're working on some more basic commands. He's full of energy & enjoys running around outside & playing with balls. He has fun playing with my 2 dogs.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_U8A8hru5O90/Rll7Lbxwk8I/AAAAAAAAAuQ/HYkMqgKIUm8/s400/Gordon1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5069218291947443138" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_U8A8hru5O90/Rll7Lrxwk9I/AAAAAAAAAuY/BK-c_YVwPEA/s400/Gordon2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5069218296242410450" />
Update-Amy Williams writes:
As some may already know. I found out by accident
that I go to school with Gordon's furever dad!

I asked him how Gordon was doing. Since I heard he
was one sick dog when he came into IBR.

He is doing amazing!!! He looks great and loves the
kids (they are 7 & 8 yr old boys)and they love him
back just as much! He is everything you want in a Field Bred Pointer. We have been training him on live birds and not only is he quite the hunter, but he handles beautifully off leash and is starting to hold point. He was definately trained for Field Trialing- but we think the training could have been abusive as sometimes he is hand shy. He is so good that we have decided to enter him in an American Field walking trial the end of the month. Our ideal adopter for Alex- would be one who is familiar perhaps with Field trialing, or one who is an experienced hunter- but also one who understands that these dogs absolutely demand human interaction and will spoil him rotten as a house pet. Alex would also be a good candidate to get his AKC Indefinate Listing Priviledge to compete in Hunt tests. Alex is house broken, crate trained, and really the Best snuggler ever! He has been delightful to have around, and is slowly learning some basic manners - like walking on lead - (he wants to GO!) He has learned not to jump over the couch and to stop petsterign the girl dogs before they get upset.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_U8A8hru5O90/Rled2rxwk1I/AAAAAAAAAtg/VtqfXItP7KA/s400/Alex.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5068693468418708306" />
He still is a good boy in a crate, especially if he gets to take his nyla bones and rope toys with him. Big and brawny as he is - Alex loves to cuddle. He has a big soft head and when he puts it down, all his extra puppy skin puddles in to wrinkles! He sleep squietly in bed at night and doesn't snore - he does like his own pillow though, or maybe you would like to share yours? Alex is a pure-bred Lemon and White American Field English Pointer- but looks like he has a big 'ol Lab-like head. He is a big strapping boy and his foster Mom says he looks like a Doggie Chippendale Dancer as he is very toned and muscular. She says he is just gorgeous. He is most likely under 1 year old and will make someone a fabulous pet and companion. When I take Alex out for a walk, he literally stops traffic with his good looks! He loves to play fetch with a tennis ball too.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_U8A8hru5O90/Rled3Lxwk2I/AAAAAAAAAto/WQ1ccPkrZTE/s400/Alex+in+Wisconsin.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5068693477008642914" />
Update from his forever home: Attached is a picture of Alex in Wisconsin this weekend. We had 18 inches of snow up north, and drifts of 3-4 feet. The dogs had a blast running through the drifts and digging around the banks of the frozen river. The picture is Alex hunting something, possibly a muskrat.

Lyn

Izzy

Izzy's History: Izzy is a pure bred Liver and White American Field Bred Pointer. She was surrendered to the rescue because she was not stylish on point to be competitive in trials. Upon coming into the rescue we could tell her puppyhood had been missed as she was so serious. It didn't take her long to learn about toys and playing with other dogs!!

Update from her forever home: Izzy has been a dream come true. This season of
hunting pheasants with her was absolutely awesome.
We shot probably 50 plus birds over her this season.
As for home life she has been a doll. She is still
a little wound up but that will come with age. I am
hoping to make her a finished gun-dog this spring so
can start running her in NSTRA come fall. I have
pics of her that I need to send to all IBR
volunteers that helped get her to me.

There are some great pics of her pointing in the field and one
of her first two pheasants that she bagged. I have
been very pleased with Izzy and she has been the
talk around my place of work after we used her at
the Christmas Party hunt on a preserve here in
Wisconsin. Also she has been extremely good with my
daughter and she tolerates the pulling of the ears
and tail. She was in an overcrowded shelter near Cincinatti, OH and was in danger of euthanasia. A good samaritan is pulled her to safety.

This is what had been reported about her:

Pookie is terrified at the shelter. And I don’t believe from her reaction to me she has led an easy life. It took over 10 minutes to get her to come out and meet me. Once out she would hit the floor if I tried to pet her. They said she ignored the cats in the front office and she was just as sweet as can be with me but frantic to get out of there. They aren’t full right now but the director has been on vacation and is coming back Monday so all bets are off after that. Not that they aren’t rescue friendly but they are high kill. Hope you can take her as it may be her only way out of there. She’s about 35-40 lbs maybe.

Report from Amy who was overnight overnight hostess to Pookie on a two-day transport:

Pookie made it to MN today! It will take some time
for her to get adjusted, but she is already well loved.

Please share this email with everyone in the group.

Thanks again,
The Appel Family

Debby had another update soon thereafter:

I just talked to Bryan and Wendy, and Pookie is doing GREAT! When I was on my way back from picking up Pookie, I was listening to radio. After a while, the station faded out. So I hit to the scan button to find something else. The first station was airing a program called "The Pet Show". You’re probably familiar with it, but I’d never heard it before. Within the first minute, I heard a quote which I want to share with you. I may be an “old softy”, and bit emotional seeing Pookie snoozing in the back seat, but this quite literally brought tears to my eyes.

He said:

“Once you save a dog's life, they will pay you back everyday for the rest of theirs"

Thanks again for helping bring Pookie to us.

 BryanPookie with her new brothers.

Pookie, now known as Nia (pronounced N-EYE-YA) is doing great! We’ve had no problems with her at all. She’s a wonderful dog, and a great companion. She’s had no accidents, hardly barks, and at bedtime she runs into her crate and curls up and goes to sleep. She’s also a joy to walk. She doesn’t pull at all on the lead. Usually, the lead just hangs loose. She’s content to walk at my side. Wow, I’ve never had dog do that! She may have been a rescue dog, but she certainly was trained well, at some point. Nia has no shyness, or timid behavior problems either. That could have been due to her surrounding, and being stuck in a noisy shelter. She’s quite the snuggle-bug, and loves curling up next to you.

Nia has settled in so well, it’s hard to remember when she wasn’t with us. We consider ourselves very lucky. Friends of ours have often remarked after meeting Nia that “If I knew it would be like her, I’d get a dog too” . That’s when you know she’s made a good impression. Some of these comments have even come from “non-dog” people. (Personally, I don’t know how anyone could be a non-dog person, but strangely, they do exist)

I will say, a few stuffed animal toys have not fared well since Nia arrived. She really enjoys finding out what makes them so soft. It’s almost comical. She’s not content until every bit of stuffing has been removed and laid in a big pile. Once, she had so much of it up, she looked like she was laying in a puffy white cloud. (Dang, I wish I had a picture of that) I hear this is typical of pointers.
Oh, in case you’re wondering, the name Nia is actually short for “Iphigenia“. She was the daughter of Agamemnon, leader of the Greek forces at Troy. I took a Greek Tragedy class about 20 years ago. Her name is sort of a tribute to my professor who had such enthusiasm and energy, he was able to make that dreadful class tolerable.

Darla - now called Daisy

Darla's initial Petfinder posting: Darla is a beautiful Black and White American Field English Setter under 2 years old. She seems to be housebroken, is great with the kids and sure loves to watch those birdies!!!!! She is soft and very cuddly too--my 4 year old was lying all over her yesterday and she loved it. When she was out this morning with me the boys were riding bikes right past her and it didn't spook her at all, nor did she chase after the bikes as most doggies would do! (she was too busy watching birds!) I don't know about cats as we don't have any but she is SO birdy that she would definitely need to be tested before she was expected to behave around them! :)
Update from Darla's new home to foster mom Anne:

I just wanted to send you a quick note as I realize it has been a while. I just wanted to tell you that Daisy is working out very well. She is a real sweety and is getting along very well with our Cavalier. They have actually become very close.

Our backyard is full of squirrels, birds, sometimes deer and most recently a coyote. Daisy has now started to sit behind our air conditioner and hide so that the squirrels and birds don't see her. I have also been able to take her to a training facility to try hunting. I have been able to shoot over her and she is not gun shy. She is also a natural in the field going on point several times when we have been out.

The dog hair is a little harder to keep up with but all in all she is doing very well and very happy.

Hope all is well with you.

Jeff
